 FAQs

  • Throwing is working with clay on the potters wheel. A lump of clay is thrown by the potter into the centre of the wheel and then worked with the hands as the wheel spins to control and manipulate the clay into a symmetrical circular form - your pot. I use an electric wheel that students will need to stand up to use.

  • Hand-building covers a broad range of techniques but essentially put, it is working with clay at the workbench (i.e. not the potter’s wheel). It’s perfect for beginners as it doesn’t have to be very technique focussed and the sky is the limit when it comes to creativity here.

  • Glazing is a process by which to decorate pottery. There are many different types of glaze and ways of applying it, but in my studio we focus in on just a couple. I use a lot of dipping and pouring glazes in my work which allow for a varied and experimental application of colour. I also offer students the use of brush on glazes and underglaze to achieve more controlled results. After the glaze is applied, the pottery is fired in the kiln to cone 7 (1255*c) before being allowed to slowly cool.

  • No! I teach throwing and hand-building at beginner level. All that is required is a willingness to get your hands dirty (quite literally). The ability to focus along with a bit of patience wouldn’t go amiss, but really with pottery it’s the taking part that counts!

  • Although I don’t generally cater for children’s workshops due to practical reasons, I am not wholly adverse to running them. I cannot however accommodate children under the age of 8. If you are interested in booking a kids workshop then please get in touch via email, phone or WhatsApp to find out more.

  • Yes. Unless you have been specifically made aware, all the glazes I use on my pots are dishwasher and microwave safe.
